Beginner guide

Start surfing in Essaouira with the right conditions.

For a first session, the most important thing is not the perfect wave. It is a reassuring zone, a stable board and an instructor who adapts the rhythm.

Is Essaouira suitable for starting?

Yes, when the timing is well chosen. The bay offers space, a sandy bottom and useful whitewater to learn paddling, standing up and keeping balance. It is more reassuring than a rocky or very powerful spot, especially for a first session.

You simply have to accept that the ocean decides. In Essaouira, the wind can rise quickly and make the sea choppier in the afternoon. A good beginner session is therefore often set during the cleanest hours, with a spot and board adapted to the real level of the group.

What you really learn in a first lesson

A first surf lesson is not only about standing up once for a photo. The instructor teaches you how to understand the wave, position yourself on the board, paddle at the right moment, fall correctly and return to shore without getting in other surfers' way.

These basics make the difference between a fun session and a confusing one. Even if you stand up quickly, real progress comes from repetition: choosing better whitewater, looking forward, stabilising your feet and starting to feel the line.

Send your dates and level: we will point you to the format that fits best.

How does a first lesson work?

  • Welcome, wetsuit and board choice
  • Safety briefing: zone, priorities and return to shore
  • Take-off exercise on the sand
  • Water practice in the whitewater
  • Simple corrections after each wave
  • Debrief and advice for the next step

Will you stand up in the first session?

Often yes, especially with a suitable foam board and easy waves. But standing in whitewater is only the start. Reading an unbroken wave, positioning yourself, paddling at the right time and following a line take more practice.

The realistic goal of a first session is to catch several waves, understand the basics and leave with clear reference points.

Mistakes to avoid as a beginner

  • Choosing a convenient but too windy time
  • Taking a board that is too small for your level
  • Trying to go straight to unbroken waves
  • Getting tired by paddling without method
  • Underestimating the cold and leaving the water too early
  • Booking only one session if your goal is progression

What to send before booking

To receive a useful answer, send your dates, number of people, children's ages if any, your comfort level in the water and your goal. Someone who only wants to try does not need the same format as a traveller who wants to learn for a full week.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be sporty?

Normal fitness is enough. Surfing is tiring at the beginning, but the lesson adapts to the rhythm.

From what age can a child start?

Often around 7 or 8, depending on comfort in the water, attention and the day's conditions.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Yes, you need to be comfortable in the water even if the lesson stays close to shore.

How many lessons do I need to progress?

One lesson is enough to discover surfing. To really progress, plan several sessions over a few days or a surf stay with KSE.

Is equipment included?

For a coached lesson, the board and wetsuit are normally included. The exact format is confirmed when booking.
