The best time to surf mainly depends on your level.
Essaouira can work all year, but not for the same reasons. Beginners look for gentle waves, intermediates want consistency, and advanced surfers wait for real swells.

Spring
March, April and May are often pleasant for learning and progressing: still some swell, fewer storms, milder temperatures and reasonable crowds. Conditions can change from one week to another, but spring often gives a good compromise between usable waves and a calmer atmosphere.
KSE and Seagull Club can both advise you on the cleanest windows, suitable levels and whether it makes sense to stay in the bay or look at the spots around Essaouira.
Summer
The waves are smaller in June, July and August, with more wind in the afternoon. Mornings can be very good for beginners and families because the waves are often gentler and the holiday atmosphere makes a first experience easier.
For intermediate or advanced surfers, summer is less reliable. You need to accept shorter sessions, aim early in the morning and not come only for big waves. It is, however, a good period to combine surfing, town, beach and wind activities.

Autumn
September and October often offer the best balance: warmer water, less wind, the first more serious swells and fewer people than in high summer. It is a very interesting period for travellers who want to progress without the pressure of peak season.
For a surf stay with KSE, autumn gives room to adapt: sessions in the bay if the level is beginner, possible trips if the group is ready, and more comfortable recovery between days. For a Seagull lesson, it is also a pleasant time to learn without too many crowds.
Winter
November to February brings the strongest swells. It is interesting for intermediate and advanced surfers, but more variable for beginners and families. Some days are excellent, others too big, too windy or too messy for clean learning.
An advanced surfer can like this period because it gives more power and more options around Essaouira. A beginner should stay cautious: ask for local advice, keep flexibility and accept that a session may be postponed.

Choose according to your goal
For a first session, do not look for the most spectacular month. Look for simple waves, moderate wind and a readable beach. May, June, September and October are often the most comfortable periods for learning.
For a surf stay, spring and autumn are more interesting because they give several possible scenarios. If the conditions are small, you work on technique. If the swell arrives, the team can adapt the programme and consider a trip.
For an independent surfer, winter and shoulder seasons can offer better waves, but they require real weather reading. The bay is not the only option: Sidi Kaouki, Imsouane or other spots may enter the discussion depending on level.
Why ask before booking
A seasonal average does not replace the real state of the ocean. Before locking in a lesson, camp or trip, send your dates, level, number of people and flexibility. The answer will be much more useful than a simple 'come in September'.
