Families

Let the family surf without turning the holiday into a marathon.

Essaouira works very well for a family if you respect children's rhythm, weather and different levels. The right format matters as much as the spot.

Why families like Essaouira

The beach is long, the town is easy to live in and there are many activities outside surfing: medina, harbour, walk along the seafront, restaurants, excursions. Non-surfers are not stuck waiting in a car park.

For surfing, the bay can offer gentle conditions for children and beginner adults. You simply have to choose the right times and avoid overloading the schedule. A family rarely succeeds with four hours of imposed activity every day; it works better with short, well-timed sessions and a programme that breathes.

What to check for children

  • Comfort in the water and ability to listen to instructions
  • Reasonable session duration
  • Suitable wetsuit to avoid getting cold
  • Simple spot, without too much current or wind
  • The child's motivation, not only the parents' motivation

How to organise a good family week

The right rhythm depends on the ages and energy of the group. For beginner children, two or three well-timed sessions over a week are often enough to keep motivation. Motivated teenagers can do more, especially if conditions are clean and fatigue stays manageable.

Keep half-days free for the medina, the harbour, a walk or simply rest. Essaouira is enjoyable even without surfing every day; that is precisely why it is interesting for mixed families, with some who want to surf and others who want to enjoy the town.

Weather, fatigue and safety

With children, the best window is not always the one that fits the schedule. A calmer morning sea is better than a late session in the wind. The wetsuit matters too: Atlantic water stays cool, and a cold child quickly loses motivation.

The instructor must be able to adapt: shorten the duration, change zone, suggest a smaller format or postpone if the conditions are not suitable. That flexibility is what separates a good family experience from a session that feels forced.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which school should a family choose?

Seagull Club works well for a simple beach session. KSE is better suited if you want several days or a stay. Send your dates, levels and children's ages.

Is surfing dangerous for children?

When coached in a suitable zone, with a foam board and instructor, the risk is limited. Conditions must remain simple.

Can children and adults be in the same lesson?

Yes if the levels and goals are compatible. Otherwise a separate format will be more effective.

How many sessions should we plan with children?

For a discovery, one session is enough. For a family week, two to four well-spaced sessions often work better than a lesson every day.

Can a child stop if the session is too cold or too long?

Yes. The format should stay flexible. A short successful session is better than a long one that tires or discourages.

Are you coming as a family?

Send ages, dates, levels and the goal of the stay. We will point you to the format that fits your family's rhythm.
